Assalamu 'alaykum everyone. Recently I came across the book 'Al-Ghunyah li-Talibi Tariq al-Haqq' by the famous Shaykh 'Abdul-Qadir al-Jilani, rahimahullah.

Along with being famous for tasawwuf, he was also notable for being upon the madhhab of Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal, rahimahullah, in usul and furu'. After reading the chapter on 'aqidah in 'al-Ghunyah', I decided to translate it into English for the benefit of my brothers and sisters who don't know Arabic. Also, Shaykh 'Abdul-Qadir is a personality whom everyone who attributes themselves to Ahl as-Sunnah agree upon his righteousness and the correctness of his religion.

The irony is of all of this is that many people today who revere Shaykh Abdul-Qadir, and who consider themselves representatives and defenders of 'traditional Islam', tasawwuf, ash'arism, etc., level grave accusations of bid'ah and anthropomorphism at today's [true] Ahl as-Sunnah. Perhaps without realising it, they are also accusing 'Abdul-Qadir al-Jilani of bid'ah and anthropomorphism, as he clearly affirmed Allah's Attributes in a manner that would be unacceptable to those contemporary critics. If they accept these aspects of 'aqidah from 'Abdul-Qadir al-Jilani, one wonders why they do not accept those very same aspects of 'aqidah from Ibn Taymiyyah, Ibn 'Abd al-Wahhab, and those whom they call 'Wahhabis' and 'Salafis'.

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful, and in Him we seek help. And may Allah bless our Prophet Muhammad, and his family and all of his companions.
