You, or someone you know, may attend worship, teach Sunday school, and volunteer, yet still feel like that is not enough. Over the years a call to ministry keeps nagging at the soul, but the call from God is pushed to the back burner of the human computer we call the brain. However, the feeling that God wants more never goes away. This Christmas you may give and receive many gifts, but feel like you are never giving or receiving the gift which truly satisfies.

So this Christmas maybe some of us need to be the ones who give encouragement to those we believe are called to ministry but holding back. We can be the ones who let them know God has given them the special gift to help others through pastoral ministry. And we can share how blessed we are to have seen their gifts first hand. This Christmas there may be some of us who need to receive the gift of God’s call. Yes, at times the call to ministry seems overwhelming, impossible, and unfathomable. Like those before us we wonder why God would choose someone like us to serve.

Yet, with the Holy Spirit working in and through us, we are important and valuable to God. But what is the next step? Where do we go from here? How do I give my brother or sister the gift? What do I do if I feel I need to accept the gift of call to ministry? If you are the gift giver you can simply pass this blog onto your brother or sister.

You can also take time to visit with your sister or brother in the faith. Let them know you have seen their gifts. Ask questions like: 'Have you ever felt like God is calling you to serve beyond teaching Sunday school, serving on the church board, or volunteering?' And 'Do you see the gifts God has given you to serve?' Take time to pray with them for God’s wisdom and guidance. Remember, this may or may not be the time for a person to receive a call to ministry. If you are the gift receiver, and you are feeling a call take time to pray for God’s guidance, visit and share your call to ministry with a pastor or another person you trust.

Second, if you have visited with another person and feel they would benefit from further reflection or you are just now receiving your call and want to become clearer on your call and gifts then the Lay Academy for Rural Church Ministries has created the next step. This January we will be offering the Discovering Your Call to Ministry online course which will help you discover your gifts and call to ministry. Applications are now being taken for the four week online course being offered beginning in January 2016. During the course you will take a spiritual gifts inventory and explore your gifts for ministry, read how God called those in the Bible and how your call might be similar to theirs, and finally develop a clear statement of your call and gifts for ministry.
