Nuon Game System

NUON Console NUON is a DVD technology created by VM Labs in 2000. The company, staffed by many former Atari employees who previously worked on Jaguar, had kind of a good idea. They wanted to make a video game console and get it into as many homes as possible. Their solution was to create a chip called Aries 3 to be included in DVD players. This technology both enhances DVD playback and allows DVD players to play video games.

DVD Players that incorporated NUON technology were made by Samsung, Toshiba, and RCA. Samsung was the biggest supporter, and RCA players could not play games.

Among the games available in a NUON version is a version of the classic Atari game Tempest. As a gaming platform, NUON’s performance seems fairly competitive with the current generation of consoles.

However, NUON never really got off the ground. DVD players that supported NUON were expensive. In addition, by the time that the technology came out it was outdated. NUON games run somewhere between a PlayStation and an N64. But in 2000 Dreamcast was on the market and soon there would be PS2.

It's basically a 5th generation console that was released when the 6th generation was well underway. My entire NUON collection I have five of the seven U.S. Released games. I'll briefly talk about each of them. First is Tempest 3000. This is the NUON's killer app. It was created by Jeff Minter who also programmed Tempest 2000 for Atari Jaguar.

It's basically an updated version of that game with some additional play modes. Surprisingly, it's never been released in any other form. Next is Freefall 3050 - A D. This is a pretty weird game. The concept is that you're falling. While you're falling you have to shoot at stuff. Honestly, the game makes no sense to me. Last time I played it I got killed a lot when trying to actually do what you're supposed to do.

Then I just didn't do anything and beat the level. Space Invaders XL is a home console port of Space Invaders DX. It's Space Invaders with some extra features. My copy is sealed and I haven't played it yet. Merlin Racing is a not so great Mario Kart 64 ripoff.

And Ballistic is kind of a neat puzzle game. Very simple, but one of of the better games that exist. A version was released for Game Boy Color that's pretty cheap. An Xbox version was announced but later canceled. Box bouygues telecom. On to the games that I do not own.

The Next Tetris, which is widely available on other platforms, and Iron Soldier 3, the sequel to the previous two Jaguar games. It's hundreds of dollars and extremely rare because it was recalled. But the mech game did see a release on PlayStation.

Additionally, there's a Korean only game called Crayon Shin-Chan. There were only four movies released that support the NUON enhancements, none are very good. They are Bedazzled, The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai, Dr. Dolittle 2, and Planet of the Apes (the Markey Mark version).
