After a bit of my own experimentation and trial-and-error, what worked for me was just running it on different compatibility settings. It worked on Windows 7 for me. Just right click the game's icon, then 'Troubleshoot Compatibility'. Don't use the recommended settings, click on the option that says troubleshoot based on what you experienced, or whatever.
